8 Tips for Managing Your Team Effectively

8 Tips for Managing Your Team Effectively The role of a manager  isnt always smooth sailing. Whereas at the beginning of your career  its likely that you were purely  responsible for your work alone, its is now your duty to inspire, lead and motivate your team to accomplish a set of goals for the organization. Easier said than done right? Not everyone is going to be easy to work with and ensuring everything is running without a hitch can often prove a challenge. So how can you go about being a great manager  who displays authority and leadership, at the same time as maintaining respect from their peers? Here are a few of our top tips for effective management. 1) Maintain good communication Employees want to be kept in the loop about ongoing projects, goals, and deadlines, so its essential that you communicate well with them and inform them about goings-on within the organization. Its also essential that you encourage feedback and that your staff  feel that they can approach you with any questions or issues they want to address, so making yourself accessible to your staff  is critical. 2) Build positive working relationships Its important to get to know members of your team individually,  not only on a professional level but on a more personal level too. When you put the effort in to get to know a bit more about how your colleagues  are doing and what they are interested in, it will build a much better rapport among the team. 3) Acknowledge good work Dont be one of these bosses who only gives feedback when youve got something to criticise! By providing your staff with positive feedback it will help to build their confidence and encourage them to get more involved in the future,  so its vital that you acknowledge their achievements and the effort that they are putting in. Encourage creativity and ensure that everyone is clear about what is expected of them. 4) Be real Your team doesnt expect you to be superhuman, so if youre feeling the pressure and need a helping hand, dont be afraid to admit it and if you make a mistake, own up! By showing the human side of yourself and allowing your staff to get to know you a bit better, your team will feel more relaxed and comfortable approaching you. 5) Be decisive A good leader needs to be able to assert their authority and make important decisions for the team. There is no space for flakiness in a leadership role, so its crucial that you stick to your guns and go with what you feel is best the business. 6) Delegate jobs to the right people Part of why it is vital that you establish a relationship with your team and get to know them individually is so you can assess what their strengths are. People perform better  and are more engaged  in roles where they feel they are employing their best skills, so delegating proper  functions that suit each will have a significant impact on the productivity of the team. 7) Manage conflict When there is conflict in the workplace, it should not be ignored. Turning a blind eye could lead to a negative atmosphere, which could have implications for staff productivity and  communication among the team may suffer. When an issue arises, its crucial that it is addressed straight away before it builds. 8) Set a good example Your staff will look to you for guidance and inspiration, so its essential that you set a good example to gain their respect. If you expect them to behave professionally and commit to their work, its vital that you do so yourself. Make sure that you are doing your job, continuing to develop your career  and support your team in doing so too.

On the Job by Anita Bruzzese How to Keep Teams Motivated to the Finish Line

On the Job by Anita Bruzzese How to Keep Teams Motivated to the Finish Line How many times have you been about to reach your goal and for some reason, you lose interest? I've heard bosses complain that they've just about got their team to achieve a new goal -- and then enthusiasm seems to wane. The bosses try to figure out a way to jump-start the flagging interest, but can't seem to keep the team motivated. A new study sheds light on why this happens. It seems that in the early stages of competition, the newness of the event and uncertainty about a competitor's abilities makes those involved wonder if they can even win. If a team performs well and jumps to an early lead ahead of competitors, for example, then they start to believe that winning is possible and that feeds into their motivation, researchers say. But, once the team stops worrying about attaining their goal, then they begin to think about how much more they're going to have to do in order to finish. That causes them to relax too soon and their efforts begin to decline, the study finds. The key to maintaining motivation? Focusing the team on more than just the position as a leader. Instead, researchers say bosses can keep teams motivated to the finish line by talking about a higher standard -- such as the team's strong finish in other projects. The comparison to past success often spurs teams to push with greater effort in the final stages, researchers say.

The Basics on Investing On Your Bedroom

The Basics on Investing On Your Bedroom Creating the ideal post-work sanctuary is a big priority when getting your first home. Whether on your first job and renting your first flat or making the big leap to investing in your own property, there are several things that you need to prioritize when furniture shopping. Your bedroom will be your very own sanctuary and haven away from the busy everyday life. It is the one place where you can shut the doors to the causes and cares of a hard day in your career and personal life.  You have to be able to pick high quality, stylish, and functional furnishing for your first bedroom.  According to George Nelson: The Design of Modern Design, a bedroom  represents the heart of the home,  no matter what its size. Invest in a great paint job. The colors of your bedroom should be neutral and clean, to also give you a clean mentality while being there. A neutral room does not necessarily mean boring. You can choose a theme of monochromatic colors and comine them to make a beautiful, understated palette. You can later inject your personality by adding accessories with splashes of color, and change it as you wish. Next on the list is the bigger furniture. The bed should always be enticing to lie on and encourage relaxation.   So if you think it is excessive to buy a luxury bed, think again. Almost a third of your life is spent lying down on one, having the comfort of a bed is an invaluable cost. Don’t scrimp on the bed. Even if something is a bargain, if it is of low quality and is not exactly what your heart desires, then you would end up losing in the end. If you have always wanted a four poster bed, invest in one. It is much better to hold off and save for something you want than to settle for something that does not fit your style. Try not to buy a TV for your bedroom. It is distracting, and studies say that it is detrimental to your sleep patterns. Instead, invest in proper shelving and storage. Investing in your first home can get worrying, but at the end of the day all you need to ask yourself is am I happy with this? Try to do your research to get the best deals, but also, follow your heart. Creating an ideal home pays dividends for your well-being and the other parts of your life. What to teach kids so theyll do well at work

What to teach kids so theyll do well at work The skills that help us most in life are not the skills we learn from homework. In fact, Time magazine reports that homework is wasting kids time on a number of levels, and in his book The Homework Myth, Alfie Kohn rails against the massive amount of family time thats lost to homework. Finally, Harris Cooper, who studies homework at Duke University, found that too much of it can be counter-productive to learning. Ambition, self-confidence, and goal-setting are better indicators of adult-life success than doing well in school. So instead of harping on homework and test scores and insipid parental competitions over childhood metrics, help your children learn the skills that really make a difference in their future success or failure: 1. Teach your kids to persevere. Persistence is what gets us what we want in life, and persistence without the risk of failure is not persistence its monotony. Some people think persistence is perfection, but perfection isnt rewarded in the workplace its penalized. So dont teach your children to be perfect, teach them to try things that are very hard and not likely to go well. Then watch them overcome their fear of failure and try anyway. You know that parental instinct to tell your kids everything will be all right, and that failure isnt really failure? Its not realistic, because persistence is moving forward even when you recognize that the odds are bad. So teach your kids to recognize bad odds, and help them move forward regardless. 2. Teach your kids to make decisions without doing all the research. We all know we need goals, but most adults are hindered by their inability to commit to something big and meaningful. After all, how do you know whats best for you to be doing at any given time? You dont. We never know whats best for us, because were limited in our knowledge. But we have to take action anyway. Teaching your child to set a goal even if its not perfect is a great tool, because making a decision with imperfect information is a key to adult life. You cant teach a kid to shoot for perfect decisions, because there arent any. But you can teach your child how to take action in the face of the information that could change. (One of my favorite discussions about this sort of decision-making is on the blog Mind Your Decisions by Presh Talwalker, who writes a feature called Game Theory Tuesdays.) 3. Make yourself a positive thinker so you can teach it to your kids. The biggest indicator of how happy someone is in adult life is how positive their outlook is. Adults can change their outlook with practice, and parents can help their children learn and practice positive thinking. You can start by training yourself to talk to your children in terms of the good things they do. In his upcoming book The Kazdin Method for Parenting the Defiant Child, Yale psychologist Alan Kazdin helps parents focus on the positives in their childrens behavior instead of the negatives. If you always focus on the bad behavior instead of the good behavior, your child will learn to do that for herself. Kazdin advises, for example, to say, You did a great job cleaning your room dont forget to put the clothes in the hamper instead of Youre not done there are still clothes on the floor. Did your child do something good? Make a big deal out of it, because as an adult, if you cant focus on your achievements its unlikely that youll have any. 4. Teach your kids frugality. A parents instinct is to provide as much as possible for their kids. This probably worked very well in the prehistoric era, when children would freeze to death if they didnt get enough animal skins. Now that were dealing in iPods rather than skins, the need to provide isnt so urgent. The best way to learn how much you can live without is to live without it. I was forced, by a series of crazy circumstances, to learn how to live without almost all my possessions. I thought I needed so much more stuff than I really did. It was a great lesson for me, and it made me realize that the only way to teach frugal living is to force it. If you impose frugal living on your kids, perhaps artificially, you end up giving them the freedom to focus on a future career for reasons more important than the stuff they can buy with their salary. 5. Know your own limitations. Your children are growing up in an environment much different from the one you grew up in. The rules are different, and the measures for success are different. So dont find yourself stuck in old ways of thinking. Challenge your own assumptions first, in order to give your child the strongest foundation for adult life. For those of you with older kids, heres a list that will help you give advice during the college years.
